Earlier this week on Tuesday, the Harry Winston Jewelry company bought a $50 million dollar diamond through Christie's auction house. Of course, this was not an ordinary diamond, the coveted gem is a rare fancy vivid pink diamond.
The exact science how pink diamonds obtain their natural color is unknown. What is acknowledged, is that pink diamonds often contain a secondary color hue; most popular are brown, orange, and purple.
The Gemological Institute of America, better known as GIA in the jewelry industry, grades pink diamonds on the following scale:
- Faint
- Very Light
- Light
- Fancy Light
- Fancy Intense
- Fancy Deep
- Fancy Dark
- Fancy Vivid
The former “Pink Legacy” diamond, newly named the “Winston Pink Legacy” diamond was graded by the GIA as “fancy vivid”, an attribute given to only 1 in 100,000 pink diamonds; a rarity for a rich pink tone.
Diamond costs’ consider the 4C’s: color, cut, clarity, and carat weight. This particular diamond was going into the Magnificent Jewel auction with sky-high bids. With rich color, an excellent cut and grading in clarity, plus an astonishing 18.95 carat weight, this gem was worth every penny. In context, this diamond was selling near $2.5 million per carat.
This brilliant diamond was located in a South African mine over 100 years ago. To this day, it has not been altered since its original cutting in 1920. Gemologists have determined that the “Pink Legacy” diamond is a Type II stone; meaning that it is almost chemically pure, with exceptional brilliance and translucence. Keep in mind that pink diamonds can be found naturally or created in a lab, each that affects a stone’s quality and cost.
